Bring Windows Experience Index Back to Windows 8

As part of reshuffling things, cutting down on old features and introducing new features that happen with any new software release, Microsoft decided to bring the axe down on a relatively useless feature called Windows Experience Index on Windows 8.1. Windows Experience Index or WEI is a benchmarking tool that rates the performance of a computer based on its hardware and software configuration. However, the tool was not entirely removed, and it was still possible to generate the WEI scores by running a process via the command prompt. It was only a matter of time before someone came up with a proper frontend to the process that benchmarks the system. The time has come.
ChrisPC Win Experience Index is a free program that runs the benchmarking tool, reads the scores generated by the program and displays it in a window that resembles the original Windows Experience Index interface.
chrispc-wei
The benchmarking process too works just as it did with the original tool. Close any other running applications, launch ChrisPC Win Experience Index, and click "Rate this computer". The program will then carry out its various tests while you wait. Once it's finished, you'll see separate scores for your CPU, RAM, graphics and hard drive, with the lowest highlighted as the "base score".
ChrisPC Win Experience Index works not only on Windows 8 but on Windows 7 and Windows Vista as well.

Edit: Another tool that brings back the missing Windows Experience Index tool is Winaero WEI Tool

Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 Released by Microsoft

Microsoft has been hard at work trying to improve Internet Explorer with each release. Internet Explorer 11 is the latest release of their popular browser, which shipped with Windows 8.1 and almost a month later, it is now available for Windows 7 in both 32 and 64 bit variants and in 95 languages.
Microsoft claims that Internet Explorer 11 is unto 30% faster than other browsers in terms of ‘real world’ websites load performance. While we are not sure what qualifies as a real world website, Microsoft has used their own websites to demonstrate this increase in speed so take their word with a grain of salt. They have also created a new HTML5 based benchmarking tool called EtchMark so you can pit it against other browsers to test.
Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7
Internet Explorer 11 also cuts down on the CPU cycles so expect better performance and battery life which only means a good thing. Other features include:
  • New debug tools available now for web developers, accessible via F12
  • Hardware accelerated 3D graphics
  • HTML 5 video support with battery efficient playback
  • Better touch support
  • Support for new and improved web standards including CSS, HTML5, WebGL and web performance improvements
Microsoft will be rolling out Internet Explorer 11 via automatic Windows updates in the coming weeks. If you can’t wait, you can already download it from the link below. Give out the demos at Internet Explorer Test Drive a try once you install the browser.

Bring Back Google’s Black Bar Below the Omnibox using Proper Menubar

The Black bar below the Omnibox (URL bar) in Google page was very useful to navigate between different Google services. Recently Google updated its search page and added a  new apps section as a replacement for the menu bar. Even though we have all the apps in that drop down box, the old menu bar was pretty convenient for all the users. Previously I wrote about a Chrome extension to bring back the Classic mail composewindow in Gmail. Today I came with  an extension called “Proper Menubar” to bring back the old black menubar below the omnibox in Google search page.
proper-menubar-1
Proper Menubar is available for Chrome and Firefox. You can download it using the link at the end of this post. Once you install the app, you can see the extension’s icon near to your URL bar in Chrome and in the bottom of the screen in Firefox. That icon is used to enable and disable the extension in your browser. If you click that icon you can see a button “Proper Menubar is ON”. Click that button to enable and disable the menu bar in your Google search page.
proper-menubar-4
Using this extension won’t affect any of the Google updates and Google Apps on the search page. You can also customize the “Proper Menubar” application. Go to Settings -> Extensions -> Proper Menubar  -> Options. There you will see a window as shown in the screenshot below. In the first section “Basics” you can edit contents on the black menu bar. Exclude the unwanted links from the menu easily. At the end of the page you have an option to display that black menu bar in all the webpages you visit.
proper-menubar-3
In the designs section, you can change the background and opacity of the menu bar displayed. Also you can change the country website code of the application. This custom menu bar will restore the links from Google services and from some of the important web services. By enabling the option to show this bar in all the websites you visit, it will make the options handy and open any Google service instantly. Even you change monitors, this app will work fine. It works great on HDPI screens.
proper-menubar-5
If you really miss that black menu bar on Google home page, then Proper Menubar is a must have extension in your browser. Try this app in your browsers and share your experience with us in the comments. Thanks for reading, do share this post with your friends.

Create a Public Folder Where Anyone Can Add Files

Dropbox and SkyDrive allow you to have “Shared Folders” where a folder is shared between all members of the group. Any member can contribute files to the shared web folder and such a thing is ideal for collaborative efforts like for sharing photos with guests after an event. People can view photos uploaded by other users as well as upload their own to the shared folder.

Google Drive has just received a nice little graphical update

Google Drive has just received a nice little graphical update, with document editors now neatly compressed to maximize space on the content itself. Go check it out and let us know how you find the same.

It is noteworthy, that earlier in September too Google had rolled out an update for Google Drive. The Internet Search giant had claimed that the version 1.2.352.10 will bring bug fixes but in actuality offered more than that. Through the last update introduced tweaked UI and easier uploads.

Official MEGA Synchronization Client for Windows is Out. Syncs Multiple Folders

When authorities shutdown Megaupload and arrested Kim Dotcom for abetting copyright infringement last year, they didn’t realize they were stirring up the hornet’s nest. Within weeks, Dotcom’s file sharing service was up in a new avatar. Simply called MEGA, the new cloud storage company’s primary focus is on user’s privacy and security of their data. MEGA has always been in the news ever since, and Dotcom saw to it, never missing an opportunity to speak out against those who brought down his previous company.
Cloud storage is more or less a saturated business, dominated by the likes of Dropbox and SkyDrive, with two dozen smaller players vying for a bigger piece of the pie. So, what new does MEGA brings to the table? For start, a hefty 50GB storage space for free user, and the ability to synchronize multiple local folders to respective folders in the cloud. The last thing is possible via MEGA’s desktop synchronization client for Windows that’s just been spotted in the wild.

BitTorrent Chat: Server-Less Private Instant Messaging

BitTorrent, the company behind the revolutionary BitTorrent peer-to-peer data transfer protocol, has announced a new project – a secure, server-less instant messaging client based on distributed technology, the same that drives BitTorrent network. Called BitTorrent Chat, the messaging application doesn’t store any conversation on any servers, unlike most popular messaging services such as Facebook and Whats Up, which means they are protected from third-party access and data breaches.
While BitTorrent Chat doesn’t store any messages on a third-party server, it does need a central location to get the conversation going. It’s just like downloading content through BitTorrent – people have to first connect to a tracker to know where the message should be sent. TorrentFreak, who caught up with the developers, say that the details are a bit fuzzy at the moment.

The application is currently in the Alpha stage of development. Those who want to give it a try, head over to BitTorrent Labs to sign up for the private Alpha.

Adobe Makes Entire Creative Suite 2 Applications, Acrobat 3, Premiere Pro 2 and More Free

In a surprising move, Adobe has released an older version of some of their most popular products as freeware. The version which can be now downloaded from Adobe’s website free of cost is Creative Suite 2 and includes Photoshop CS2, Illustrator CS2, InDesign CS2 and more. This is great news for those who couldn’t afford to shell out hundreds of dollars for an image editing application, and is definitely bad news for GIMP and the numerous other free Photoshop clones.

MyPaint: Free and Open Source Alternative to Corel Painter

MyPaint is a free and open source painting program specialized in creating digital art, very similar to what Corel Painter is capable of. You may have heard about Corel Painter, or you may have not, which is entirely okay. The name of this program seldom gets mentioned outside the circles of digital artists, unlike Adobe Photoshop, which is almost as ubiquitous as Microsoft Paint, thanks to rampant pirating (hey, did you know you can grab Adobe Photoshop CS2 for free, and legally?).

Drop box Updates Website, Mobile and Desktop Apps With New Features in Version 2.0

Dropbox has released version 2.0 of its apps for Windows, OS X and Linux with new sharing features and notification improvements as well as an updated sleek design. The new feature set is shared with the website as well as Dropbox mobile apps for Android, iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Kindle Fire users.
Dropbox 2 0 for OS X and Windows
Users can now receive real time notifications on their desktops when anyone shares a file with them, as well as keep an eye on the changes happening with their files on Dropbox. Whether the user performs any update on their files or someone else does in a shared folder, a newsfeed of sorts is available when you click the Dropbox icon. Accepting or rejecting invites to shared folders is also possible from the same menu.
Dropbox 2 0 for Windows
This makes sharing files and keeping track of changes much easier, specially in situations where collaboration is important. However, to share files, you are taken to the website once you click the button. We hope Dropbox is listening and implements some sort of desktop sharing UI so that users don’t have to switch between website and app for such small tasks. The new menu layout also shows the sync status to keep you up to date. In case you want to access the old style menu, hold down the Ctrl button while clicking the icon to see it.
The events feature is also available on the Dropbox website but not on the mobile apps yet. You can get real time push notifications for file sharing invites on mobile apps, just like the desktop apps.
Along with recently announced features such as file previews on the web as well as camera uploads from mobile and desktop devices, Dropbox is integrating itself neatly into many aspects of our workflow. With the new updates, we would rank Dropbox as number with SkyDrive as a close second and Google Drive as a distant third.

Mobogenie: Manage Android Devices, Install Google Play Store Apps From Your PC

For those looking for a way to manage their Android phones from the undeniable comfort that only a mouse, keyboard and big screen can provide, there is yet another contender – Mobogenie. This impressive software allows users to manage every aspect of their Android devices from their computer. This includes basic tasks such as back up and restore of contacts, messages, photos, videos and other contents of their phone, as well as some interesting features such as the ability to send SMS from their PC, and download apps, games, ringtones and wallpapers using their computer’s internet connection, thus avoiding additional cost incurred on their mobile bills.

Get Email Alerts When a Web Page Changes

Monitor Web Pages for Changes
VisualPing.io is a new web app that lets you monitor web pages and it sends an email alert when it detect any change in the content of the page. Unlike other web-based change detection tools, Visual Ping is easier to setup and completely free.
It takes 3 easy steps to monitor a web page as illustrated in this screenshot.
Enter the web address (URL) of a web page and Visual Ping will create a screenshot image of that page. You can create a selection anywhere on that page using your mouse and enter your email address. The service will monitor that particular area of the page every hour and whenever it detects a change, it will send you before and after screenshots of the specified area.
I have been testing the service for the last two days against several popular websites – including CNN and nytimes.com that are updated very frequently – and VisualPing.io does seem like a useful service. The email alerts arrive on time and the included before-n-after screenshots images are sharp and clear.

Changes Detected by Visual Ping

CNN - After     CNN - Before
And while we are on the topic of change detection, I highly recommend the Page Monitor add-on for Chrome or you can build your own page monitor with Google Docs.
Ads by GoogleFree SoapUI Monitoring yovia.com/Smartbear/
Monitor Your Own and 3rd Party APIs With Our Free Monitoring Tool
Google Docs does require some knowledge of XPath while in the case of Page Monitor, you can visually selected DOM Nodes on a page to add them to your monitor queue. The add-on will also highlight changes in pages that have been modified.

EagleGet: A Fantastic Download Manager and Video Downloader

Back in the days of dial-up internet, download managers and accelerators were very much in vogue. These software grew out of necessity to speed up transfer of files across the internet, and were widely adopted by users in the hope of getting the most out of the limited bandwidth they had access to. When high speed internet connections replaced dial up internet, download managers and particularly download accelerators went out of fashion. Although it’s questionable whether these software causes any acceleration in downloads, there is one good reason why they are still relevant - web browsers make poor download managers.

Genymotion: Easy to Use Android Emulator for Windows

Different Android devices behave differently, which is why Android emulators are a great thing for developers, because it gives them an opportunity to develop applications without having a real Android device. A basic Android emulator is included with every copy of Android SDK. But using the default Android emulator is not a very pleasurable experience.
Genymotion is an alternative, cross-platform Android emulator based on the open-source project AndroVM. It runs on all major platforms - Windows, Linux and Mac. Because it is so easy to use, Genymotion can be used by anyone and not just developers to test drive new Android apps or to see how the latest mobile operating system from Google fares.
genymotion
Genymotion uses VirtualBox to run pre-configured images of virtual devices with or without Google Apps (Play Store, etc.). Virtual devices are based on a real devices such as Nexus 7, Nexus S, Nexus One Jelly Bean, WXGA Tablet, WSVGA Tablet, and more. Windows users do not need to separately download VirtualBox as it is included with Genymotion.
To download Genymotion, open this page and register an account on their website. After the registration is completed, you can download the software. Registration is necessary as you will require to sign in to your account when you launch Genymotion on the desktop.
Once you have signed in to your Genymotion account from the desktop via the Genymotion software, select a virtual device image to download. When the download completes, you will be asked to connect to ADB (from Android SDK) for various purposes like copying a file to VM, installing apps, debugging, etc. This step is optional.
Now load the virtual device and play around with your mouse.
