Dude, what’s wrong with my Internet speed?
Over the next few days, if not weeks, you can expect to spend more time staring at your download dialog box, waiting for videos to buffer, or clicking away impatiently as you wait for your web pages to reload.
And no, it’s not the service provider to blame; at least not entirely.
For, communication services across the country, and many parts of the world, have taken a hit owing to outages in three submarine cables that are part of the undersea cable network that connects India to the global communications system. A majority of voice and data signals are transmitted through these cables; in fact, most communications services companies are entirely dependent on them.
The current outages that affect three of the eight communications cables that connect India to the rest of the world — SMW-4, IMEWE and EIG — are likely to impact services provided by Bharti Airtel, Tata Telecommunications, Reliance Communications and public sector service providers BSNL/MTNL. These cables, which connect land-based transmission terminal stations across continents, are laid for tens of thousands of kilometres along the seabed. These thick optic fibre cables are sometimes disrupted due to natural phenomena, such as earthquakes and extreme turbidity current, or by coming in contact with fishing trawlers or shark bites. Fixing this is a complex procedure that uses advanced reflectometry techniques and may take weeks.
Reason not clear
The reason for the current outage is not yet clear. Media reports have largely attributed the disruption to an attack by three divers, who were arrested by the Egyptian Navy who found them trying to cut an undersea cable, near the Alexandria port. The cable the divers were allegedly trying to cut, reportedly in a bid to cripple communication services in Egypt, was the SMW-4 (South-East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe-4), one of the eight cables carrying traffic between Egypt and Europe.
The SMW-4 also carries voice and data communications between 15 countries, including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Algeria and France. Earlier in the week, media reports indicated that four other cables around Egypt had also suffered disruptions. The IMEWE, the other submarine cable that is currently seeing disruptions, is a 13,000-km cable system running between India and France, while the EIG (Europe India Gateway) connects India with 11 European, African and West Asian nations.
‘Sabotage unlikely’
That the Alexandria arrests have anything to do with the outages we are facing today is far from proved.
In fact, Seacom, an international private cabling systems company that owns and operates submarine cables, debunked this theory. Reacting to media reports that connected the SMW-4 damages to these arrests, the statement indicated that it is unlikely the two events are related. “We think it is unlikely that the damage to our system was caused by sabotage. The reasons for this are the specific location, distance from shore, much greater depth, the presence of a large anchored vessel on the fault site, which appears to be the cause of the damage and other characteristics of the event,” read the message posted on its website on March 27.
The message added that investigations are on by the Egyptian authorities regarding this, and that the company will announce the final cause of the cable cut once the repairs are completed and the damaged section is recovered from the seabed and inspected. Messages posted by Seacom on subsequent days have said that the company completed “reprioritisation and reallocation of capacity” and is working towards re-establishing full restoration.
Indian Internet affected?
Responding to a query on this, a statement from Bharti Airtel’s spokesperson confirmed that there have been multiple fibre cuts on SMW-4, IMEWE and EIG cable systems.
“This has affected the overall traffic between India and Europe. Bharti Airtel is working with the cable consortium for restoration of services. The voice traffic has been completely normalised,” he explained. All necessary steps are being taken to ensure data services are available to our customers by routing traffic on alternative routes, he added.
State-owned BSNL too has been affected. But, of the three cables facing disruption, BSNL depends only on SMW-4, a senior BSNL official told The Hindu. “Domestic traffic is not affected, but we are seeing some sort of a time lag when it comes to international data traffic. There is an impact, but it is not huge,” the official said, adding that the impact on data traffic is likely to be around 20 per cent.
Unlike other communications providers, BSNL also has the back-up option of satellite communication. “But barring a few specific customers who use our VSAT services, a majority of our data traffic comes from undersea cables. But we have the option of falling back on the satellite option in case of emergencies,” the official said. In the current situation, the official explains, BSNL uses other SMW cable systems. “So, the high-end routers are programmed to take alternative routes; the system measures the availability of the channel, the time taken to reach and takes an automatic and most efficient gateway. This minimises impact of such outages on broadband speeds and so on.”
A telecom industry source said that the effect is likely to be felt more, starting Monday, when the long weekend will be over and businesses will resume. “The SMW-4 carries majority traffic for many players, so the impact will definitely be felt. The repairs could take anywhere between a few days or a week or two.” These submarine cables are jointly-owned and maintained by a consortium of communication service companies, given the huge investments and resources involved.
Media reports from neighbouring Pakistan indicate that Internet services there have taken a huge hit.

HP Printers Support Web Printing via Email
The dream of a “paperless office” is still far from reality and printers continue to be an ubiquitous part of our homes and workplaces.
Printers are still “dumb”
However, in the last few years, while mobile phones have transformed from being mere “calling devices” to “smart computers”, printers are still seen as “dumb” devices that are too dependent on the computer. That’s because you always have to install device drivers on a computer for the printer to work and second, you can only send printing jobs to a printer through a computer.
So, for example, if there’s an airline e-ticket or an Excel sheet on your BlackBerry or iPhone that you want to print on paper, you’ll have to first transfer that file to a computer before printing because printers and smartphones are still not familiar with each other. Yes, there are some apps that permit printing from mobile phones but these are again tied to the computer.
HP has recently launched a new range of consumer printers that seem to tackle this problem in a very interesting way. They call the new range Photosmart Premimum.
The printers are web-enabled and you can just connect them to the Internet through an ethernet cable or over Wi-Fi – they work out of the box without requiring a computer and you therefore don’t have to worry about installing any device drivers.

Email is the new Print Command
Every printer is assigned a unique (and impossible-to-guess) email address – you can just send your Office documents, pictures or PDFs to this email address and the files will get printed within the next minute. Since the email message is the new Ctrl+P, you can use the printer to print stuff from any device that is capable of sending email be it a mobile phone, a gaming console, an old PDA, your Internet-enabled TV or even an iPad.
I have had a chance to play with these printers and they almost work as advertised. You send an email from your mobile phone and, assuming there’s no paper jam and that there’s enough ink in the printer, the print job is ready within the next 30-60 seconds. If your email message has multiple attachments, they’re all printed but on separate sheets.
Print Apps for your Printer
There’s more. You can download and install apps on your printer (just like a mobile phone) and these apps can pull web pages and other content directly from the Internet.
For instance, there’s an app for Google Calendar to help you print your daily or weekly calendar. Or you can get the daily news headlines using the Yahoo! News or USA Today app. The Google Maps app lets you find addresses using the virtual on-screen keyboard (it’s fairly usable) or you can even print driving directions without requiring a computer.
The Print Apps Marketplace isn’t huge yet but the company will soon provide an SDK to third-party developers and that might change the equation. All apps are currently free but there are plans to have paid apps as well where HP will split the revenue with the developer using the industry-standard 70-30 model.
The Google Docs Connection
Finally, there’s another brilliant feature in these web-enabled HP printers that’s worth a mention – you can store files to the Google Cloud directly from the printer. For instance, you can scan a document and the scanned image will get stored to your Google Docs as a searchable PDF.
Going forward, you should also be able access your Google Docs files directly on the printer though these features weren’t available at the time of writing.

Printing Web Content on Phones
There’s however one limitation with email based printing on smartphones. How do you print stuff that you cannot attach to an email message. For instance, most smartphones don’t offer you an option to save a local copy of web pages so how do you send web pages from the phone to the printer?
HP won’t comment on whether or not they are working with phone companies like Apple, HTC or RIM to bring native printing support in smartphones but until then, it will not be easy for consumers to print raw web pages directly from their phones.
That said, if you are out in the market looking to buy a new printer (or an all-in-one) that is more than just a worthy replacement for your old printer, it obviously makes more sense to go for these web-enabled printers because you get all the features of a regular printer, you can print documents and photos directly from mobile phone(s), you don’t have to turn on the PC for printing your daily dose of Sudoku and the same device can also help you go paperless once the Google Docs storage link is live.
How to Use Google Cloud Print from the Desktop
Google Cloud Print is a new service that will help you print emails, documents and other files from any mobile phone or computer that’s connected to the Internet. You don’t need anyspecial hardware or print drivers – just a regular printer and a Windows computer that is running the latest version of Google Chrome browser.
It takes no more than a minute to setup Google Cloud Print.
Launch Google Chrome on your computer that’s connected to the printer and enable Cloud Print under the settings of Chrome (troubleshooting tips). Now open the Gmail mobile website on your phone, pick an email message and choose Print. You may also print individual file attachments that are attached to that message.
Use Google Cloud Print from the Desktop
Google Cloud Print, in its current form, has one major limitation – you can only send print jobs from an iPhone or an Android based mobile phone.
Won’t it be useful if you could also send print jobs to your printer from any other remote desktop or laptop computer over the Internet using Google Cloud Print itself?
One option is that you create your own email based printing setup using Dropbox – it will work with printers that are attached to Windows, Mac or Linux machines and secondly, you can send print commands from any desktop or mobile device as long as it can send regular email.

Microsoft to redesign Windows 8 as PC sales plummet
Six months after the release, Microsoft — which relies on Windows licences for half its profits — is getting ready to make compromises to key aspects When Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer first revealed his software for the touchscreen world in February 2012, he said he was "betting the company" on it.
There were “no compromises” made in replacing the desktop with Windows 8’s tile-based interface, Ballmer insisted.
But six months after the release, Microsoft — which relies on Windows
licences for half its profits — is getting ready to make compromises to
key aspects of the software. It comes after its leap into the tablet
computing future was described as “confusing” by new users and has been
blamed for plummeting sales of PCs, which had their sharpest drop on
record in the first three months of this year, down 14%.
The biggest expectation is that the update to Windows 8, codenamed Blue will revive the start button.
Tami Reller, promoted to head Microsoft’s Windows division after Ballmer
ejected former chief Steve Sinofsky, announced on an internal Microsoft
blog on Monday that Blue will be “an opportunity for us to respond to
the customer feedback” since the launch.
One of the bestselling apps on Windows 8 has been Stardock, which lets
the user add the start button, and ModernMix, which lets tile apps run
on the old desktop. That will have given Reller pause — with the fact
that sales of Windows PCs have shrunk for the past four quarters,
declining year—on—year by 11.4% between January—March to about 74m.
The blame for that was put squarely at Sinofsky’s door by Bob O’Donnell
of the research company IDC: “The costs associated with touch have made
PCs a less attractive alternative to dedicated tablets and other
competitive devices, he said.” At Gartner, a rival research company,
vice—president Michael Silver says Microsoft “didn’t listen to customers
who were pointing [the start button problem] out in testing. They could
have had a middle ground, but chose not to — I think Sinofsky made sure
it was pretty difficult to make major changes if he didn’t want them.”
Sinofsky and Ballmer are understood to have argued over such flexibility
— which saw the junior leave quickly.
Meawhile the traditional PC business is merging with that of tablets and
smartphones — in which Microsoft is barely visible. IDC said that while
PC sales were plunging, tablet sales in the first quarter of 2013 hit
49.2m, overtaking desktop—based PCs. Smartphones passed that mark long
ago, having outsold PCs since the end of 2010. But Microsoft’s Windows
Phone has less than 5% share worldwide, compared with 70% for Google’s
Android and 20% for Apple’s iPhone. Microsoft only has about 1% of the
tablet market, according to IDC.
This week Microsoft co—founder and chairman Bill Gates defended Windows
8: “It takes the benefits of a tablet and the benefits of a PC, and it’s
able to support both of those — so if you have [Microsoft own—brand
tablet] Surface, Surface Pro, you’ve got that portability of a tablet
but the richness of a PC in terms of the keyboard, Microsoft Office of a
PC,” he said.
Reller was also able to announce that Microsoft has now sold 100m
Windows 8 licences in the six months since it was launched, matching the
previous figure for Windows 7 at the same time in 2010. Though she
didn’t explain it, business customers are buying Windows 8 licences but

Hackers find hole in Google Glass security
Google Glass, the wearable computer being developed by the search giant, might be a threat to its owners’ privacy because it has no PIN or authentication system, hackers have discovered.
Jay Freeman, a Santa Barbara-based programmer who specialises in cracking smartphone security for both iPhone and Android devices, discovered that Glass has a “root” capability which can be enabled by attaching it to a desktop computer and running some commands.
That would then give a hacker the ability to take control of the Glass’s output — meaning a hacker could monitor everything the owner was doing from a smartphone in their pocket.
“Once the attacker has root on your Glass, they have much more power than if they had access to your phone or even your computer: they have control over a camera and a microphone that are attached to your head,” explains Mr. Freeman in a blogpost.
“A bugged Glass doesn’t just watch your every move: it watches everything you are looking at (intentionally or furtively) and hears everything you do. The only thing it doesn’t know are your thoughts.” He points out that “it knows all your passwords, for example, as it can watch you type them. It even manages to monitor your usage of otherwise safe, old-fashioned technology: it watches you enter door codes, it takes pictures of your keys, and it records what you write using a pen and paper. Nothing is safe once your Glass has been hacked.” Even if the device shows a red light to show others when its video camera is on, a user probably wouldn’t notice it — because the light would be facing away from them.
Mr. Freeman reckons that about 10 minutes would be enough for a hacker to install a “rooted” version of the software that Glass ships with. “Sadly, due to the way Glass is currently designed, it is particularly susceptible to the kinds of security issues that tend to plague Android devices,” he writes.
“The one saving grace of Android’s track record on security is that most of the bugs people find in it cannot be exploited while the device is PIN-code locked. Google’s Glass, however, does not have any kind of PIN mechanism: when you turn it on, it is immediately usable.” Mr. Freeman got hold of one of the demonstration units of Glass, and quickly found that there is a “Debug Mode” which lets it connect to computers over a USB connection. That in turn lets anyone who has access to the device to install their own software if they use certain technical tricks.
He recommends that Glass should have a protection system that functions when it is taken off by the owner, such as a biometric — either using patterns in the iris or voice — or a PIN.
And for the privacy concerns, both that users have expressed and that Freeman has now opened up, he suggests there would at least be a simple one over worries about the camera: a plastic shield that could slide over the camera. “This makes it clear that ‘I’m not recording right now’,” he suggests.
Google hadn’t responded to a request for comment ahead of publication.

Introducing Video Slides
There’s a pretty interesting thread on Hacker News where people have shared links to their favorite technical talks. The thread includes dozens of links pointing to YouTube, Vimeo and other video websites.
It’s a treasure trove and I want to click on every single video that’s mentioned on that page but the problem is that I will then end up having at least two dozen new tabs in the browser. And this isn’t just about Hacker News, you can open any popular thread on sites like Quora or Reddit and you’ll be overwhelmed with links pointing to interesting stuff.
How do you deal with such a large collection of raw links? I have written an app called Video Slides that some may find handy here. The app will scan the text for video URLs and put them all in a single slideshow without cluttering your browser.
You copy the text of the entire thread and paste it into Video Slides. The app will then extract all the Youtube and Vimeo URLs from your text and will create a slideshow putting one video per slide. You can use the arrow keys to navigate through the slides.

You copy the text of the entire thread and paste it into Video Slides. The app will then extract all the Youtube and Vimeo URLs from your text and will create a slideshow putting one video per slide. You can use the arrow keys to navigate through the slides.
